Considerable commentary has been written about Saint John’s Abbey and University during its formative, developing, and maturing periods over more than one hundred and thirty years. Fr. Hilary Thimmesh, president of Saint John’s University, suggested that some contemporary essays and comments be assembled in a volume that could be available as a record for interested readers. He asked Robert L. Spaeth, then dean of the College of Arts and Sciences of Saint John’s University, and me to invite contributors and edit such a volume which was published as A Sense of Place: Saint John’s of Collegeville.
